Sofia is located in the western part of the country, on The Sofia Plain and on the lower slopes of Mount Vitosha. The city’s average altitude is 550 meters above sea level, the climate is moderate and continental, characterized by cold winters and relatively cool summers. The average temperature in January is 1 degree below zero Centigrade, and the average July temperature is 20 degrees Centigrade. The capital of Bulgaria Sofia is an ancient city whose territory has been continuously inhabited for nearly 10,000 years and variously occupied by Thracians and Romans. Today Sofia is an important educational and cultural center and falls among the top tourist destinations on the Balkan Penisula due to its outstanding sights and surrounding natural beauties.
     In this walking tour you will pass the main sites. These are the highlights of the tour: National Palace of culture, Main Pedestrian street, Religion square, the Administration of the President, National Archeological Museum, 16th century Banya Bashi Mosque, St. Nedelya – old metropolitan church, National Theater, former Royal Palace (now housing National Revival Art Gallery and Ethnographic Museum), St. Nikolay Russian Church, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, National Assembly Square, where in the middle of the square sits the impressive Tsar Osvoboditel (King Liberator) monument erected in 1907 by the Italian sculptor Arnoldo Zocchi, Alexander Nevski Cathedral – the biggest one in Bulgaria and according to many – the most spectacular building in Sofia.
